Tips for keeping a perfect cat litter box

Few places are as important for cats as their litter box. Giving them a place they actually want to use and where they feel comfortable is one of the tasks that all of us pet owners should take better care of.

In order for your cat to recognise their litter box as the right place to do their business, always keep it clean and place it in a calm and quiet area, away from food and transit areas. Your cat needs privacy and a lot of cleanliness.

How to prepare and maintain your cat’s litter box

Using a standard-size litter box as an example (30x40 cm), we’ll explain how to prepare and maintain your cat’s litter box according to the type of litter that you use.

  • Absorbent litter (non-clumping)
    • Fill the tray with 3-5 cm of litter.
    • Remove the solid feces with a scoop daily.
    • Completely renew the contents of the tray once a week or whenever it is no longer clean and sanitary.
  • Clumping litter
    • Fill the tray with 5-8 cm of litter.
    • Remove the formed clumps and solid feces with a scoop daily.
    • Every 2-3 days, add in new litter to keep it thick. Completely renew the contents of the tray once a month or whenever it is no longer clean and sanitary.
  • Plant-based litter
    • Fill the tray with 2-3 cm of litter. You will see how the material decomposes when it comes into contact with liquid, which is normal.
    • Remove the solid feces and more damp areas with a scoop daily.
    • Completely renew the contents of the tray every 2 or 3 days or whenever it is no longer clean and sanitary.
  • Silica gel
    • Fill the tray with 3 cm of litter.
    • Remove the solid feces with a scoop daily.
    • Completely renew the contents of the tray after 3 or 4 weeks, as the product starts to turn a yellowish colour.
  • Single-use packs: Sanicat 7 Days Aloe Vera
    • Fill the tray with the entire one-dose pack.
    • This product is designed for zero maintenance; you do not even have to remove the solid feces
    • Renew the contents of the litter box after one week.

Precautions for handling the litter box

Furthermore, given the material the litter is made of, it is important to follow proper cleaning guidelines whenever you use it:

  • Wash the litter box well with soap and water or special wipes every time you change the litter.
  • Wear gloves or wash your hands thoroughly after handling the litter box.
  • Dispose of waste in the organic bin (or in accordance with specific indications for waste disposal in your area).

And remember: pregnant women should not be in any type of contact with pets’ litter boxes or waste.
